Well Drilling Estimate Template
Per-foot drilling, casing, grouting and the pump package — with depth stated as an expectation. Free PDF.
No trade prices a bigger unknown than a water well. The depth is whatever the aquifer is at that spot, and the only evidence is the drillers' logs from wells nearby — which is why every honest well estimate is a per-foot document with an expected depth on it rather than a total. What the client is buying is a rig on site, a rate per foot, a rate per foot of casing, and a clear statement of what happens if the hole comes in shallow, deep, or dry.

What this estimate commits you to
- How long it stands
- Thirty days on mobilisation and the per-foot rates; the pump and tank are held only while the supplier's list price stands and are re-quoted if it moves.
- What it does not cover
- Everything past the wellhead: the trench and water line to the building, electrical service to the pump, the pressure tank's plumbing indoors, and any filtration or treatment the water test turns out to require.
- What would change the price
- Depth, which is not knowable in advance. Footage above or below the expectation is billed at the rate stated, a formation that needs more casing than figured adds casing feet, and a hole abandoned as dry still owes the footage drilled.
- How the client accepts it
- Sign and pay the mobilisation to enter the rig schedule; a drilling date follows the state well permit, and the balance is invoiced against the driller's log the well is registered with.

What to put on a well drilling estimate
- The mobilisation charge, which is owed whether the well produces or not
- The drilling rate per foot and the expected depth, with the neighbouring well logs it was taken from
- Casing per foot, stated separately, because how much is needed depends on the formation
- Grouting, well seal and development, each of which is required by the state code rather than optional
- The pump, pressure tank, wiring and control package, priced as its own package that depends on final depth
- What happens to a dry hole: whether it is abandoned at the client's cost and what a second attempt would be
Questions
How can I estimate a well without knowing the depth?
Give the rate and the expectation separately. State the per-foot price, the depth of the nearest logged wells, and the depth the estimate's total is calculated at — then the client understands that the total is arithmetic on an assumption rather than a promise, and a 320-foot well does not arrive as a shock at 240.
Who pays for a dry hole?
Whoever the estimate says, and it must say. The industry norm is that the client pays for footage drilled whether or not water is found, because the rig, the fuel and the crew were spent either way — but a client reading that for the first time on an invoice will not accept it.
Does the pump price depend on the well depth?
Yes, and it is the reason the pump package is estimated rather than quoted. Pump horsepower, wire size and drop pipe length all follow the depth the well finishes at, so the package is re-priced from the driller's log once the hole is complete.
