A well is billed by the foot, and nobody knows how many feet until it is drilled. That is the whole difficulty of this invoice: the customer agreed to a rate rather than a price, and the document has to make the depth, the casing and the yield legible enough that the total reads as a consequence rather than a surprise.

What to put on a well drilling invoice

  • Total depth drilled, at the per-foot rate quoted
  • Casing by the foot, by diameter and material, which is priced apart from drilling
  • The pump, pressure tank and wiring as their own lines
  • Permits and the well log filed with the state, which is usually required
  • Yield achieved, in gallons per minute, and the static water level
  • Water testing, where it was performed, and what it covered

Questions

Why can't a well be quoted as a fixed price?

Because the depth is unknown until the drilling finds water. A per-foot rate with the other components priced separately is the honest structure, and an invoice that shows depth, casing and yield lets the customer see exactly what their ground cost them.

What is the well log and who gets it?

A record of what the drilling passed through, the depth, the casing and the yield, filed with the state in most jurisdictions. It follows the property rather than the owner, and a buyer, a lender or a health department will eventually want it, so its reference belongs on the invoice.

Should water testing be included?

Quote it separately. Bacteria and basic chemistry are standard after a new well, but the panel a lender or a health department requires can be broader, and bundling the cheap test makes the required one look like an add-on.
