Junk removal is estimated from a photograph of a pile that is still growing. Volume is the price, and volume is exactly what a phone camera flattens: a garage that looks like a half load is a three-quarter load once it is loose in the truck, and the mattress leaning against the wall costs more than everything beside it. So the estimate prices by fraction of the truck, names the items the transfer station charges separately for, and puts the volume conversation before the loading rather than after it.

What this estimate commits you to
- How long it stands
- Seven days, because it is priced against a photograph of a pile that people keep adding to right up to the morning of the pickup.
- What it does not cover
- What the transfer station will not take at the standard rate: paint and solvents, propane tanks, tyres, medical waste, and anything requiring a hazardous waste manifest — plus demolition of anything still attached to the building.
- What would change the price
- Volume in the truck, measured on the day against the bed markings. A load bigger than the photographs suggested, items that must be carried up stairs or dismantled to leave the room, and anything that has to be routed to a facility charging a per-item surcharge to take it.
- How the client accepts it
- Confirm by text or sign on the crew's tablet before loading begins; volume is agreed with you at the truck, not after it is full, and you may cut the load down at that point.

What to put on a junk removal estimate
- Price by the fraction of the truck, with the truck's cubic yards stated so the fractions mean something
- What the estimate was made from — photographs, a video or an on-site look — and that it is confirmed on arrival
- Special-handling items listed by name: mattresses, tyres, televisions, paint, appliances with refrigerant
- Labour where the load is not at the kerb — stairs, a basement, a carry across a lawn, dismantling on site
- Disposal and tipping fees, and which items the receiving facility charges extra to accept
- What you will not take at any price, so nobody discovers it with the truck already blocking the drive
Questions
How do I estimate a load from photographs?
Estimate a range in truck fractions and say the volume is agreed on site before loading. A photograph has no depth and no back row; every experienced hauler has arrived at a half-load photograph and found a full-load garage, and the fix is a written rule about who confirms the volume, not a better guess.
Why do mattresses and televisions cost extra?
Because the facility charges you to accept them, and the charge is per unit rather than per yard. Most transfer stations price a mattress on its own because it is bulky and its springs foul the equipment; four states — California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island — additionally run mattress recycling programmes funded by a fee at the point of sale. Televisions and computers are banned from landfill in North Carolina and about two dozen other states, so they are routed and charged separately, and an appliance holding refrigerant has to be evacuated by a certified technician before anyone may crush it. All of those are pass-through costs, and the estimate should name them rather than absorb them.
Should the estimate mention where the junk actually goes?
It converts better when it does. Donation, recycling and landfill are three different destinations at three different costs, and a client choosing between haulers frequently chooses the one whose estimate says what happens to their sofa.
