How to invoice for tutoring

What to put on a tutoring invoice

  • The student's name, since the payer is often not the person taught
  • Lesson dates and durations, rather than a single monthly total
  • The subject or exam being prepared for
  • Materials, past papers or exam entry fees passed on
  • Missed lessons and how they were treated under your policy
  • Whether lessons are online or in person, where the rate differs

Questions

Should I invoice per lesson or monthly?

Monthly is easier for both sides, provided the lessons are listed inside it. What a parent objects to is not the total but being unable to check it.

How do I handle a missed lesson?

State the policy on the invoice and apply it visibly. A missed lesson charged without explanation reads as an error; the same charge with 'under 24 hours' notice' beside it reads as the agreement working.
