Video is bought as a finished film and built as three separate jobs — shooting, editing and everything bought along the way. The edit is usually the largest of the three and the least visible to the client, so an invoice that hides it inside a day rate makes revision requests feel free when they are anything but.

What to put on a videography invoice

  • Shoot days with crew roles, since a two-person day and a five-person day are not comparable
  • Edit hours or a stated edit fee, separate from the shoot
  • The number of cuts and their durations — a 60-second and a 15-second cut are two deliverables
  • Revision rounds included, and the price of further ones
  • Music, stock footage and voice-over licensed for the project, at cost
  • The usage licence: where the film may run, for how long, in what territory

Questions

How many revision rounds should be included?

Whatever you agreed — but put the number on the invoice. Video revisions are unusually expensive because each one re-renders and re-delivers, and the round that costs you a day is the one nobody counted.

Who buys the music licence?

Usually you, on the client's behalf, at cost. It must be licensed for the actual usage: a track cleared for social will not cover a broadcast spot, and the invoice should name which was bought.
