A quote proposal is the only quote that prices more than one answer. Instead of a single number the client must accept or refuse, it sets out two or three ways of solving the problem, each carrying one price of its own, with the reasoning that separates them. Done well it changes the question from whether to buy into which to buy — and the discipline that makes it work is that an option is bought whole. Showing how one of them is built up is fine, and often persuasive; selling half of it, or half of one and half of another, is not.

The three options, and why we recommend this one
Priced above is Option A — Stabilise, at $48,000. Option B, Stabilise and replatform, is $146,000 over twenty weeks with two engineers and an architect. Option C, Managed interim, is $7,400 a month for twelve months while you decide, with no build. Only one of the three is itemised here, because a total that summed all three would be a number nobody is being asked to pay. We recommend A: it removes the failure that costs you two hours every morning, and it lands before your peak season. B solves more and finishes after it. C buys time rather than a fix, and belongs on this list because the replatform decision may sit with a board that has not met yet.

What this quote commits you to

How long it stands
30 days on all three options together — pricing one while the others lapsed would make the comparison meaningless.
What it does not cover
Anything appearing only in an option you did not choose, and anything listed under the 'not included' heading of the option you did.
What would change the price
Choosing an option and then moving a component into it from another; the three are alternatives to one another, not a list to shop from.
How the client accepts it
Reply naming the option you want; the price fixes at that moment and the remaining options are withdrawn.

What to put on a proposal quote

  • Two or three options, never more — a fourth turns a decision into a comparison exercise
  • Each option accepted or refused whole — its build-up may be shown, but the parts are not separately purchasable
  • What each option includes, and what it deliberately leaves out
  • The difference stated as an outcome, not as a feature list
  • A recommendation, with the reason it is the recommendation
  • The date all options are withdrawn together
  • How the chosen option becomes the contract, and what happens to the others

Questions

How many options should a quote proposal carry?

Three at most, and two is often better. Beyond that the client stops choosing and starts studying, and a proposal that produces analysis instead of a decision has failed at the only job it had.

Should the options be mixable?

No, and the document should say so. Each option is sold as a whole, with its own margin and its own delivery shape; letting a client take the cheap option's price with the premium option's scope is how a proposal becomes a negotiation you did not plan for.

Is it weak to recommend one?

The opposite. Presenting three prices with no view is asking the client to do your thinking; naming the one you would choose, and why, is the part of a proposal that reads as expertise rather than as a price list.
