What to put on a carpentry invoice

  • Shop hours and site hours as separate lines, at their own rates
  • Timber by species and dimension, since it is the cost that moves most
  • Hardware — hinges, runners, fixings — itemised rather than absorbed
  • Finishing, if you are doing it, kept apart from the joinery
  • Delivery or crane hire for anything that could not be carried in
  • Any drawings or templating time, which is work whether or not it produced sawdust

Questions

Should shop time and site time be billed at the same rate?

Rarely, and the invoice should show whichever you chose. Site time carries travel, parking and the pace of working around a household; shop time does not, and a customer who sees one rate for both will assume the higher one applies throughout.

How do I bill for templating and drawings?

As its own line, by the hour. Design and templating is the part clients most often assume is free, and the only reliable way to change that assumption is to have it appear, priced, on the first invoice they see.
