Joinery is drawn before it is built, and a drawing is a scope you can bind a price to. The risk is not in the cabinet — it is in the wall the cabinet has to meet, which is why a carpenter's quote should say what the site measure assumed. Split shop time from site time on the document and both sides can see where the hours actually go.

What this quote commits you to

How long it stands
30 days from issue, with hardwood priced from the current mill list; a species substituted at your request is quoted again before we buy.
What it does not cover
Spray finishing and lacquer, electrical for integrated lighting, and removal of the existing units unless a strip-out line appears above.
What would change the price
A site measure that finds walls out of plumb by more than half an inch over eight feet, which turns a scribe into a made-to-fit panel.
How the client accepts it
A signed quote and a 40% deposit put the job in the shop calendar; the slot is not held on a signature alone.

What to put on a carpentry quote

  • Shop hours and site hours as separate lines with separate rates
  • Species, grade and sheet material named — white oak and red oak are not one price
  • Hardware by manufacturer: hinges, runners, and whether they are soft-close
  • Whether the piece arrives primed, finished, or bare for the decorator
  • The site measure date, and what the price assumes about plumb and level
  • Templating and shop drawings priced as work, because they are
  • Delivery, access and whether a unit will fit up the stair it is meant for

Questions

Should shop drawings be charged for?

Charge for them and say so on the quote. Drawing a set of alcove units is a day's work that produces the thing the fixed price is fixed to, and giving it away teaches clients that the drawing is the free part of joinery.

How do you protect a fixed price against an out-of-plumb wall?

By naming a tolerance. A scribe absorbs a small deviation and a made-to-fit panel absorbs a large one, and those are different jobs — write the threshold on the quote and it stops being an argument held in somebody's hallway.

Does a deposit hold the shop slot?

It should, and the quote should say that a signature alone does not. Timber gets bought and bench time gets blocked out against deposits, not against intentions.

About the free quote generator

Is this quote generator really free?

Yes. There is no fee, no trial period and no watermark on the PDF. Nothing on this page requires a credit card.

What is the difference between a quote and an estimate?

A quote is a fixed price you are offering to hold, and it is binding on you once the client accepts it. An estimate is your best projection of the cost and can move if the job does. If the scope is not settled yet, send an estimate instead.

Is a quote legally binding?

Once a client accepts it within the period it stands, a quote generally forms a contract at that price — the details depend on your jurisdiction and on what the document itself says. That is why the price, the scope and the exclusions all belong in writing, and why the document prints the date the offer expires.

How long should a quote be valid until?

Thirty days is the common default, and two weeks is sensible when materials prices are moving. Whatever you choose, state it on the quote: an offer with no expiry is an offer you have made for ever.

Can I raise the price after the client accepts?

Not unilaterally, which is the point of quoting rather than estimating. What you can do is price the variations the client asks for afterwards, provided the quote said what was and was not included.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Fill in the form and download the PDF directly — there is no sign-up and no login for this tool.

Can the client accept the quote online?

Not from a downloaded PDF. Saving the quote to an account gives it a link the client opens and answers on, and the acceptance is recorded against the document rather than living in an email thread.

Can I use this for any currency or country?

Yes. Choose any currency and country for either party — the totals and formatting follow your selection.
