Phone and device repair turns on a distinction the customer cannot see: whether the part is genuine, aftermarket or harvested. It changes the price, the feel of the screen and sometimes whether a feature keeps working — so it belongs on the invoice, along with what happened to the data.

Device and data
Device IMEI 356938035643809. Display fitted is aftermarket, chosen over the genuine part quoted at $210; true tone is not retained with this part, which was explained before fitting. No backup was taken and none was needed — the repair did not touch storage and all data is intact. Frame is slightly bent at the lower left from the original drop and was not straightened.

What to put on a phone repair invoice

  • The device by make, model and IMEI or serial
  • The fault reported and the fault found, which are often different
  • Part grade named — genuine, aftermarket or refurbished — since this is the price
  • Diagnostic fee, and whether it is credited against the repair
  • Data handling: whether a backup was taken, and whether data survived
  • The warranty on the part and on the labour, which are usually different lengths

Questions

Why name the part grade?

Because it is most of the price difference between two quotes, and because it has consequences: an aftermarket screen may lose true tone or face authentication on some devices. A customer who chose the cheaper part should be able to see that they did.

What should the invoice say about data?

Whether a backup was taken and whether data survived the repair. Data loss is the complaint that ends in a review, and the only defence is having said what would happen before the device was opened.
