What to put on a locksmith invoice

  • The address attended and the time of attendance
  • The call-out fee, and any after-hours or emergency premium separately
  • Hardware supplied by make and grade, since a Grade 1 and a Grade 3 lock are not the same purchase
  • Keys cut, counted
  • Whether the lock was picked, drilled or replaced, which is what a landlord or insurer will ask
  • Your licence number where the state requires locksmiths to hold one

Questions

Should the after-hours premium be its own line?

Yes. A single large call-out figure at 2am is the classic complaint about this trade, and splitting it into a base fee plus a stated night premium answers the complaint before it is made.

Why record whether the lock was drilled?

Because it determines what the customer now owns. A picked lock is the original hardware; a drilled one has been destroyed and replaced, and an insurer or landlord will want that in writing.
