Welding is billed from two places with different economics: the shop, where the equipment is already running, and the customer's site, where a truck and a generator have to arrive first. Consumables are the third quiet cost — gas, wire and discs are real money and are almost never in the quote.

What to put on a welding invoice

  • Shop hours and mobile hours at their own rates
  • The call-out or truck fee for mobile work
  • Materials by specification, since steel grade and thickness drive the price
  • Consumables — gas, wire, electrodes, discs — as a line rather than absorbed
  • The process used and the certification it was performed to, where it matters
  • Any inspection, NDT or documentation the job required

Questions

Should consumables be itemised?

For anything beyond a short repair, yes. Shielding gas and wire on a multi-day fabrication run into real money, and a shop rate set years ago rarely still covers them.

Why record the process and certification?

Because structural and pressure work gets inspected. An invoice naming the process and the procedure it was welded to is the document that saves an argument when someone asks how the joint was made.
