What to put on a courier invoice

The period covered and the number of drops completed
The rate basis — per drop, per mile, or per hour
Waiting time beyond the free window, at its own rate
Failed deliveries and redelivery attempts, which cost the same as successful ones
Fuel surcharge, where your agreement carries one, calculated visibly
Tolls and parking, at cost

Questions

Should I bill for failed deliveries?

Yes, at an agreed rate. The drive happened, the fuel was burned, and a contract that pays only for successful drops quietly transfers the cost of the recipient's absence onto you.

How do I handle waiting time?

Agree a free window — fifteen or thirty minutes — and bill beyond it by the quarter hour, itemised by stop. Unbilled waiting is the largest invisible cost in courier work.
