A spring is not just a spring: cycle rating is what decides whether it lasts seven years or fifteen, and it is the number that separates an honest invoice from a cheaper one.

Equipment
16x7 insulated steel door with a chain-drive opener. Both springs were replaced although only one had broken — they were installed together and had run the same number of cycles. Springs fitted are 25,000-cycle rather than the 10,000-cycle originals. Auto-reverse tested against a 2x4 and photo eyes realigned.

What to put on a garage door invoice

  • The door and opener by make and model, and the door's size and weight class
  • Springs by type and cycle rating, since that is what the price actually reflects
  • The service call fee, and whether it is credited against the repair
  • Safety checks performed: photo eyes, auto-reverse, force settings
  • Any part replaced in pairs — springs and cables — with the reason
  • Labour separately from parts

Questions

Why does the spring's cycle rating matter?

Because it is the whole difference in price. A 10,000-cycle spring on a door used four times a day lasts about seven years; a 25,000-cycle spring lasts far longer and costs more. A customer comparing two quotes without that number is comparing nothing.

Why replace both springs when only one broke?

Because they have done the same work and the second is near the end of the same life. Replacing one leaves the customer paying a second service call within a year, and the invoice should say that is why rather than leaving it looking like an upsell.

Should the safety check be on the invoice?

Yes. Auto-reverse and photo eye testing takes minutes and is what stops a door closing on a child. Recording that it was tested is worth far more than the line it occupies.
