A solar invoice is checked against a proposal written months earlier and against whatever incentive the customer believes they are getting. Both have moved: equipment gets substituted, permits and interconnection take their own path, and the federal residential credit is no longer what it was. Naming the system, the equipment actually installed and the incentive position is what keeps the final invoice from becoming an argument about the proposal.

What to put on a solar installation invoice

  • System size in kW DC, and the panel and inverter models actually installed
  • Any equipment substituted from the proposal, named, with the reason
  • Permitting and inspection fees, passed through at cost
  • Utility interconnection application and any meter fee
  • The workmanship warranty and, separately, the manufacturer warranties on panels and inverters
  • The incentive position stated accurately — do not print a credit the customer cannot claim

Questions

Does the 30% federal credit still apply to a homeowner in 2026?

No. The residential clean energy credit under Section 25D applied to expenditures made through 31 December 2025 and was ended early by the legislation passed in July 2025. A homeowner-owned system placed in service in 2026 or later has no Section 25D credit. Say so on the invoice rather than letting a customer discover it at tax time.

Is there any 30% credit left?

For business-owned systems, and for third-party-owned residential systems under a lease or power purchase agreement, the commercial credit under Section 48E still applies to systems placed in service by the end of 2027. That is the owner's credit, not the homeowner's, which is exactly why the ownership model belongs on the paperwork.

Should state incentives appear on the invoice?

Name them, do not net them off. State rebates and utility programmes are applied for separately and paid on their own schedule, and an invoice that quietly deducts one leaves the customer unable to tell whether it ever arrived.
