What to put on a tailoring invoice

  • Each garment, and each operation performed on it
  • Fittings, where more than one was needed
  • Rush or same-day work at its own rate
  • Bridal and formalwear separately, since they carry more fittings and more risk
  • Any work you advised against, and why
  • Collection date, and how long unclaimed garments are held

Questions

Why is taking in a jacket so expensive?

Because it is not one alteration. A jacket taken in at the waist may need the side seams, the vents, the lining and sometimes the sleeves rebalanced, and each is separate work. Listing the operations is the only way a customer can see that.

Should bridal be priced differently?

Yes, and openly. A wedding dress carries multiple fittings, delicate fabric, a hard deadline and a garment that cannot be replaced if something goes wrong. That is a different service from hemming trousers and should not share a price list with it.
