What to put on a towing invoice

  • The vehicle: year, make, model, plate and VIN
  • Where it was collected from and where it was taken
  • Hook-up or base fee separate from mileage
  • Loaded miles counted, since most payers reimburse on that basis
  • Storage days at the daily rate, with the date storage began
  • Any winching, recovery or dolly work as its own line

Questions

Why separate hook-up from mileage?

Because insurers and motor clubs reimburse them under different heads. A single combined figure is the most common reason a towing invoice is returned for itemisation, and re-issuing costs more than writing two lines.

When does storage start?

State the date and time on the invoice. Storage is the line most often disputed, and a dated arrival time turns the dispute into arithmetic.
